What are equivalent units of production, and why do materials and conversion costs need separate calculations?
Equivalent units convert partially completed units into an equivalent number of fully completed units, so you can calculate a fair cost per unit even when some inventory is mid-process. The calculation is done separately for materials and conversion costs (direct labor plus overhead) because these two cost categories typically enter production at different points — materials are often added entirely at the start of a process, while conversion costs accrue evenly as work progresses.
Using the calculator's defaults: 2,500 units in ending WIP are 100% complete for materials but only 60% complete for conversion. That single batch of units contributes 2,500 equivalent units to the materials calculation but only 1,500 equivalent units (2,500 × 60%) to the conversion calculation — treating them the same would either overstate or understate the actual work performed, depending on which rate you mistakenly applied.
What's the difference between the Weighted Average and FIFO methods for equivalent units?
Weighted Average blends beginning WIP costs together with costs added this period into one combined rate, treating beginning WIP as if all its cost were incurred this period. FIFO keeps beginning WIP costs separate — it calculates a cost-per-unit rate using only this period's costs and this period's work, then adds the (unchanged) beginning WIP costs back in afterward for the units that were already in process.
Using the calculator's defaults, this produces a real difference: Weighted Average's materials rate comes out to $8.40 per equivalent unit (blending a $16,000/2,000-unit beginning batch with a slightly different current-period rate), while FIFO's materials rate is $8.50 per equivalent unit (based purely on this period's $68,000 spent on 8,000 equivalent units). Both are mathematically correct under their own method — they're just answering a subtly different question about which period's costs "belong" to the units in process.
Why does the FIFO equivalent units formula look more complicated than Weighted Average?
Because FIFO has to track three distinct groups of work instead of one blended figure: the remaining work needed to finish beginning WIP (the units already in process at period start), the units that were both started and completed entirely within this period, and the partial work done on ending WIP. Weighted Average skips this distinction and just adds ending WIP's partial completion to total units completed.
Using the calculator's defaults: FIFO's materials equivalent units break down as 0 units of remaining work on beginning WIP (since beginning WIP was already 100% complete for materials), plus 5,500 units started and finished this period (7,500 completed minus 2,000 that were already in beginning WIP), plus 2,500 equivalent units of ending WIP — totaling 8,000. Weighted Average's simpler calculation (7,500 completed + 2,500 ending WIP equivalent units = 10,000) doesn't separate out which units were "new" this period, which is exactly why its rate blends old and new costs together.
Does it matter which method I use if both reconcile to the same total cost?
Yes, even though total costs available (beginning WIP plus costs added) are identical either way, the split between cost of units completed and cost of ending WIP can differ meaningfully between methods — and that split directly affects your reported cost of goods sold and ending inventory value in a given period.
Using the calculator's defaults: Weighted Average assigns $114,450 to completed units and $31,290 to ending WIP. FIFO assigns $113,854.63 to completed units and $31,885.37 to ending WIP — a $595.37 difference in reported cost of goods this period, purely from the method chosen, even though total costs are identical. That gap grows or shrinks depending on how much costs per unit are changing period to period; if your materials and conversion costs are stable, the two methods converge closely, but in periods of significant cost inflation or deflation, the difference can be substantial.
Which method should I use — Weighted Average or FIFO?
Weighted Average is simpler to calculate and is acceptable under GAAP for most process costing applications, which is why it's more commonly used in practice, especially when costs are relatively stable period to period. FIFO is more precise because it isolates this period's actual cost performance from whatever costs were embedded in beginning WIP, making it more useful when you specifically want to evaluate this period's cost efficiency in isolation, or when costs are moving significantly and blending periods together would obscure a real trend.
