Sales mix variance goes a level deeper. Total volume can grow while the proportion of each product sold shifts — and since different products carry different margins, that shift alone changes profit even if total volume hits budget exactly. How do I calculate sales quantity variance and sales mix variance step by step?

First, calculate what each product's volume would have been if the overall mix had stayed exactly at budget — multiply actual total units by each product's budgeted mix percentage. This "neutral-mix volume" is the anchor for separating the two effects:

  • Sales Quantity Variance = (Neutral-Mix Volume − Budgeted Units) × Budgeted Contribution Margin. This isolates pure volume growth, assuming the mix never changed.
  • Sales Mix Variance = (Actual Units − Neutral-Mix Volume) × Budgeted Contribution Margin. This isolates the effect of selling a different mix than that neutral baseline.
